2016-election

**I am purposefully not announcing who I am voting for. I have been very cautious to stay out of it on social media in all ways.**

I grew up in a house with a History Buff. My parents never shielded us from the political system. As a young child, I had strong views. As with many children? They matched my parents views pretty closely (although they have always encouraged me to think for myself and ask questions.) and while I have a different view on a few of the key issues as an adult? My political views remain largely unchanged. And I remain pretty passionate.

But this election cycle has been particularly nasty. And the worst of it has come from fellow believers.

Some of the things I have seen and heard are downright offensive. And not at all in line with scripture in any way.

God has chosen XYZ to be the President of the United States. Those who stand with XYZ will be Blessed and those who stand against XYZ will be Cursed.”

(Yes, that’s an EXACT quote from an acquaintance of mine on Facebook.) When asked (in the comments) how He knew this? He responded that God told him.

And this is just one instance that I have seen. I have seen so many disgusting exchanges between believers. I have seen so much hurt, so much shame throwing. And it’s making me sick. (Let’s leave anything either candidate may have said or done out of this. But the shaming, the accusations, the misquoting of scripture between believers? It’s just wrong.)

This morning a good friend of mine shared a devotional about “Allowing Differences” (from 1-minute Bible Love Notes) and it absolutely resonated with me.

Let’s approach this election prayerfully, seeking to do God’s will.

And let’s allow Christians to come to different conclusions about this election without discrediting their character or faith.

Why do we have to stoop to the level of many of these politicians? Yes, we are supposed to live out the Word of God and the Love of Christ. (But I’m pretty sure Christ didn’t “curse” people for simply not following his will – and I’m pretty sure NEITHER of these politicians are walking directly in His Will.)

We are not all going to agree – no matter how great that would be – on this Election. We just aren’t. And I feel that all too often we have blinders put on us and we are voting on one particular issue. But I would urge us all to put down the boxing gloves and start fighting the opposing side with love and respect. If you show the love of Christ? You are guaranteed to make a far bigger impact than insulting and disrespecting.

And Lastly? Let us remember that no matter the outcome? We are to respect our governing authorities. We know that no matter who lives in the White House? Our King is still on the throne!

Romans 13: 1-3: Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you.
